Tips on avoiding pedestrian accidents

When it comes to traffic accidents that result in injuries the focus is generally on automobiles involved. There are other people who might be injured in such an incident however such as pedestrians. When a pedestrian is struck by a motor vehicle, the outcome can be devastating and might even result in death.  To avoid this there are things that both pedestrians and drivers can do.

Pedestrians should be sure to follow the traffic laws in place and when possible use the sidewalk. This includes crossing at intersections or crosswalks when the signals indicate it is their turn. Even when the signal gives a pedestrian the right of way, he or she should look left, right and then left again before stepping into the street. When a sidewalk is not available pedestrians should walk facing traffic and dress in clothing that will make it possible to see them. Eliminating distractions such as texting and making sure to make eye contact with drivers is also a good idea.

Drivers to need to follow the rules of the road. This includes stopping at crosswalks when pedestrians are present and maintaining a slower speed while driving in an area where pedestrians might be. Anticipating that pedestrians will be in certain locations is also a good idea. When operating the vehicle in reverse, be particularly observant of your surroundings.

When a pedestrian is injured in an accident involving a vehicle they may be able to seek compensation via a personal injury lawsuit. Because these cases must be filed within a certain amount of time to be viable, it is important to meet with a lawyer who handles such cases sooner rather than later.
