Pedestrian accidents an issue in Atlanta

Walking is a popular mode of transportation throughout the state of Georgia. Unfortunately it is not always safe to do. In fact, in Georgia, the activity is becoming more and more dangerous. According to statistics that were recently released, in 2013, the number of pedestrian deaths were the highest they have been since 1997. In 2013, a total of 182 pedestrians died in accidents.

In the state of Georgia, Atlanta is particularly bad. Approximately half of the pedestrian deaths and injuries reported occur in the Atlanta metro area. Nationally, only seven other metro areas rank above it when it comes to pedestrian danger.

While people of all ages can find that they are the victim of this type of accident certain demographics are more at risk than others. These include elderly individuals and children, as well as those who are under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Pedestrians engaged in certain activities such as being distracted by a cellphone are also more likely to be involved in a pedestrian accident.

Pedestrian accidents can result in devastating injuries to those involved. These injuries can dramatically change the life of the person who experiences them, possibly leaving them disabled. In other situations they can even result in death.

While neither of these possibilities is desirable, once they have been inflicted, there is nothing that can undo them. Those who are hurt or lose a loved one have few choices on how to proceed. One of the potential choices is to file a civil action against the parties responsible.
