South Cobb High School student ID'd after being killed by car

When parents send their daughters and sons to school, it is with the hope that they will be safe and sound throughout each academic day until they can return home. Parents' worst nightmares are realized when they hear that their son or daughter was killed in an accident, as recently happened to a student at South Cobb High School.

The student, 16, was hit by a car when he was trying to cross Austell Road as a pedestrian. It happened at about 9:00 a.m., on a recent Tuesday while he was walking with a friend. He started to walk across the street but was hit by a Plymouth Neon. He was not in a crosswalk at the time.

At first, he was taken to WellStar Cobb Hospital with life-threatening injuries. He was then taken from there to WellStar Kennestone Hospital and was there until Wednesday morning. He was in critical condition and died as a direct result of his array of injuries.

The driver of the Neon, 60, stayed at the scene after hitting the student. Officials say that they don't expect to file charges against him, but do ask that anyone who has information about the incident to contact them right away.

The principal of South Cobb High School asked the community to pray as a response to the tragedy. He also sought help with a fundraising account that has been set up to cover the student's funeral expenses. He said that those associated with South Cobb High School should support their own.

This story illustrates how drivers should take extra care when anywhere near a school. Failure to do so can result in legal charges, and more importantly, in injuries and loss of life.
