Last week in Smyrna, a man died in a violent collision when the car he was driving was struck by a speeding car and caught fire.
The accident occurred on Friday, June 3, and closed down Windy Hill Road near Atlanta Road for over six hours. The road is a main artery for motorists to access Interstate 75.
The accident occurred when a 2009 Dodge Challenger was being driven eastbound at speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour on Windy Hill Road. A 1979 Chevrolet Monte Carlo was northbound on Atlanta Road shortly before 1:30 a.m., according to officers with the Smyrna Police Department. The driver of the Monte Carlo turned into the intersection of Windy Hill Road and was slammed into by the Challenger.
The force of the impact caused the Monte Carlo to explode, split into two and burn. The 26-year-old Smyrna resident behind the wheel was pronounced dead at the accident scene. The driver of the Challenger had injuries that were considered to be non-fatal; a passenger in the car was transported with serious injuries to WellStar Kennestone Hospital.
The police spokesman said, “We could tell that speed was a factor. All [other factors] are still under investigation.”
Losing a loved one or being injured in a senseless and preventable accident is a real tragedy. Sometimes the offending driver who was at fault in the accident has to face criminal charges related to his or her negligent driving behaviors. But even when there are no charges filed, survivors and injured victims can pursue civil justice through the Georgia courts.
