Takata Airbags Defect

On Behalf of | Jan 1, 2019 | Articles

Takata has been a rogue outlier for . . . it seems like forever. We first encountered bad components from them during the Suzuki Samurai wars over 20 years ago. I’m betting they built their business by being cheap. Now NHTSA, humiliated by the latest in its long string of despicable failures to regulate the industry that controls them, appears to be stepping up.

Reminds me of what the plaintiffs’ bar has done for this country.

In 2011, total number of wreck deaths in this country was the lowest since 1949. (Read that sentence again: amazing. Think how many tens of thousands of citizens don’t die every year and/or are not seriously injured every year as a result.)

The death rate per million vehicle miles travelled has plummeted in the last 30 years. Why? Safer cars is the main reason. How’d that happen? Conscience sure didn’t drive automakers to build safer cars – consciousness that the market demanded safety is what did it. And that market demand was drive by publicity about auto products cases and verdicts. The effect of that publicity was cumulative – it snowballed over time, finally forcing automakers to at least act like Volvo, and claim in advertisements stuff like “at Ford, safety is Job One.”

Ever wonder where all the wreck cases “went”? The answer is in the statistics: far fewer deaths, which necessarily means far fewer serious injuries.
